This semester many ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ÊÓƵ students have participated in weekly volunteer programs organised by the Outreach Committee.

The night was both a celebration of community service, volunteering at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ÊÓƵ and a fundraiser for two student-chosen charities, Teachabout, an educational program for Indigenous students in the Northern Territory and KVME, a Kenyan health education initiative.

‘Through ticket sales, a raffle and an auction of goods and services donated by local businesses and College residents we were able to raise $5,787 for this year’s charities,’ ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ÊÓƵ Community Representative, Joe Constable (4th Year Arts) said.

The Warden of ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ÊÓƵ College, Professor Andrew McGowan, welcomed attendees before handing over to the host of the evening, past Community Representative, Jerome Cubillo (TC 2009).

The highlight of the night was the keynote address delivered by distinguished leader in community service, Dr Phoebe Wynn-Pope (TC 1984).

‘Dr Wynn-Pope had everyone engrossed in her speech, relating her near-death experiences in war-torn Somalia and Rwanda by presenting an honest and inspiring overview of the humanitarian problems we currently face,’ Joe said.

All resources needed to run the night were generously donated. Food was provided free of cost from local butchers, delicatessens and supermarkets and prepared by Alliance catering, with wine donated by ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ÊÓƵ students.

The Gala’s success was also owed to a number of ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ÊÓƵ alumni who served the three-course meal, along with the Candystripes and the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ÊÓƵ Tiger Tones, who provided musical entertainment.

All proceeds from the night were donated to Teachabout and KVME.
